Luminosity

Luminosity
A recording of one’s own can mean many things to a musician. It’s a vehicle for self-expression. It’s a chance to pay tribute to some of our musical influences. It’s an opportunity to stretch ourselves, to challenge ourselves. It’s a statement – this represents me musically – this is what I’m into. A series of recordings is a documenting of one’s development and evolution.
This is my second release as a leader, and as on my first recording, I’m joined by Kieran Overs on bass, and Barry Romberg on drums. We’ve been playing together as a trio for a few years now, and have developed a level of comfort and trust that comes with that. Kieran (my husband) is undauntedly flexible, with a big sound and a big heart. Barry is supportive, dynamic, fearless.
Dortmund-born, Winnipeg vibraphonist Stefan Bauer and I had played together a couple of times in a duo setting, and had felt a definite musical kinship. When I had the chance to play a cherished week-long engagement at The Top O’ The Senator on Toronto last summer, I called Stefan to join Kieran, Barry and me for the gig. It was a great sound, and subsequently Kieran and I thought it would be a nice addition to have Stefan play with us on this recording.
The release of a recording of one’s own is also a “birthing” of sorts, conceiving of a musical concept, nurturing and developing original tunes and arrangements, labouring over decisions, finally letting your baby go out into the world, and supporting it. I feel as I did the first time, richer for the experience, and eager to start again.
